Dear Uncle Tim:
I don't care how many games you lose.

As Squirt's birthday draws near (November the First for all those not around to hear/bear witness to my frantic gift wrapping), I have found myself in another battle with Squirt's mom.
Um...to be clear, Squirt's biological mom. Which everytime we fight costs me long distance to New York (her) and Texas (my parents).
Apparently, now that he walks (sort of) and talks (sort of) he can no longer be identified by his nickname.
Why you ask? Because apparently "If he goes to kindergarten and calls himself Squirt he'll get beat up."
Which I guess is valid. I'm not the best judge having lived my whole life in a town with a Buddy Sr. and Jr. And a couple of Guys. And kids named after football legends. And roomates named Hercules. But apparently, normal names are requirements out East.
(I don't buy it. There are some weird ass names in New York)
Anyways, Erin says that since we gave him a normal name (which we did) we should use it. Which means I should use it.
So I told her I'd give her a week. If he doesn't respond to it then I win. If he does, she wins. And since I'm all for sportsmenship I gotta play fair all the way around.
So if you see us, call him Noah.
(Tim, I can hear you from here. No she doesn't have my balls in a vice from NYC. I just don't want him beat up at school.)

So apparently, Father's day is not a popular holiday around these parts.
Which a year ago, wouldn't have offended me. I'd have called my dad and wished him a good day, sent him something and been on my merry way making sure Tim didn't drink himself to death over shitty fathers.
But this year, as I'm sure most of you reading this have noticed, I have a kid--who despite not being able to paint or do much in the way of hand eye coordination, seemed to do a pretty fine job of making a card and getting a present. (although one would suspect that it was my girlfriend who did that--thanks Jo--it didn't go unnoticed at all--especially with your own feelings around the day, I'm sure).
So yeah, now it has a different meaning--and while trust me, I passed Mother's day without my kid doing anything for his mom--it was nice to be technically appreciated by the whole world for being a decent guy who takes care of his kid.
And maybe that's the ex-football star in me, but it made my role as a dad seem even sweeter for a little bit.

I...I can walk.
It's just hitting me now, even though I've been on my feet for a little more than 24 hours.
My parents came down and we went to the local hospital to get me checked out. My mother cried so much that Squirt thought something was wrong and started crying too so we left him with Jo, which I think made it worse before it made it better. Anyways, we got x-rays done and it looks like nothing happened. Nerves are fused together, the spinal fusion looks like a full spine, I feel everything and the doctor even asked if I'd really been paralyzed for two years.
He said I was in full perfect health and he hadn't seen a healthier 20 year old than me. I asked if I could play football again and he said he didn't see why not.
It's a miracle and I don't know what to do.

Went to Physio today on Campus. Guy didn't do much, but he gave me a new steroid.
Someone promise that if you don't see me around tonight y'all come check if I'm breathing?
I'm gonna take it now and lie down, hopefully Tim'll be by in an hour to see what's up.

So I haven't died from my first week as a full-time student and single dad. I would throw a party, but there's a sleeping, teething baby who'd I'd like to keep more asleep than teething.
I have to said, even though it's hard and I feel like I've been awake more than I've been asleep this week it's worth it. I really love that kid, and he is worth everything I can give him.
Tim and I have been talking and we're hoping to get an off campus place, start to settle, which is kinda funny since we always thought we'd move in together (NOT THAT WAY!) at some point.
In other, really proud father news, Squirt's developing this great arm, and I know that it's still early, but I can tell he's gonna have my football talent.
So uh--in summary, if anyone knows any 2 bedroom (or an affordable 3 bedroom) on the market or wants to have a play date with a 6 month old, feel free to drop me a line.

Since my class got canceled tomorrow due to the Prof being stricken with flu, I decided to get an early flight out. So now I am rocking a baby in one hand and typing with the other.
I'll still be home on Saturday as planned, but I just wanted to check in. (and maybe make some playdates. Squirt's really, really cute. I'd take a picture but then we'd be back to square one and awake and crying).

Are you going to help me babysit Squirt next week? That is what a "Godfather" does after all. Or an "Uncle". We have to start giving you a name.
Also, where the hell have you been Riggins?

Who's baby sat/has little cousins or siblings/knows how to change a diaper around here?
Also, who knows how to baby proof? And fast!
(In short, and to all of those uninformed. Yes I have a child, no I'm not with the mother. Yes I am an idiot. I'm also an idiot who took full responsibility, has full custody and loves my kid.)

| Checking in. I swear I'm here! |
[February 06, 2008 @ 1:58pm] |

So I might have become a little overexcited about this possible Quad Rugby team in town. It might have gotten to the point where I've been behind on stuff and ignoring phone calls.
Or it might just be that my parents call at obscure hours. But I'm here! I swear. I also had a ton of fun at Shawn's on Friday. But I'm never playing poker with Jo. It's just not safe. She's good!
Anything I missed while neglecting my duties as a friend?
